Churros (The one found at Disneyland)

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

Fun Fact about me, I was born in Cali, and for the years I lived there, my parents had a year pass to Disneyland, so that place had become my second home. Now as an adult, I have gone numerous times over the years and it is one of my favorite spots in the world! One of the many things I love about Disney is its food, they are so creative with their cuisine, snacks, and desserts and they update their menu for every season and every holiday. Over the years, every one of my visits has entailed getting a churro. The trip to Disney would not be complete if I didn't have at least one (or five) churros during my visit. After one of my visits to Disneyworld, shortly before the pandemic began, I thought about recreating the churros. Well, lo and behold, the pandemic kicked in and with all this time on my hands, I decided why not give it a whirl! And OMG I haven't turned back.

This churro recipe directly comes from the Disney website, where the company began posting recipes during the pandemic so people could recreate their favorite foods at home. The only tweaking I did was to make these bite-sized, vs making them longer like they are traditionally served. This recipe is simple, but it takes your full attention as you could very quickly burn these bad boys.

Disney Churro Bites

Prep time: 15 mins Cook time: 1 min per churro

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water

  • 8 tablespoons butter, diced into 1 tablespoon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, divided (1/2 teaspoon for the mixture and the other 1/2 teaspoon for coating mixture)

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup vegetable oil (more if needed)

  • 1/2 cup sugar

Steps:

  1. Add the sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to a bowl. Whisk, and place off to the side.

  2. In a small saucepan, on medium heat, add the water, butter, salt, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil.

  3. In the next few steps, you will need to make sure you are paying full attention!

  4. Once at a boil, turn the temp to a low and add the flour and mix very well, either using a spatula or a whisk. Mix until it turns into a ball.

  5. Remove from the stove, and let rest for 5-7 mins.

  6. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well with a wooden spoon between each addition of an egg. Mix well until thoroughly combined (dough-like form).

  7. Heat oil in a medium skillet on medium-high heat. If you dont have a thermometer to check the temperature (needs to be 350 degrees), hold a wooden spoon, and have the spoon touch the bottom of the skillet. If small bubbles began popping up, your oil is hot.

  8. While the oil is heating up, take a piping bag with a star-shaped tip, and add the churro dough to the piping bag. Be careful, the dough will be hot.

  9. Once the oil is hot, began piping the dough into about 1 inch, use a small knife or scissors to cut it off and drop it into the oil. Add as many 1-inch churros as you can to the skillet, and place the piping bag off to the side.

  10. Fry the churros until golden brown, and flip occasionally. They will fry for about 3-5 mins. Use a mesh spider strainer to remove the churros to a tray lined with a paper towel.

  11. Repeat adding all of the churros to the skillet until completely done. During each interval (or while the churros are frying), take the cooled-off churros on the tray and toss in the sugar/cinnamon coating.

  12. Optional: If you would like to add more sweetness, try a chocolate dipping sauce.

  13. Bon Appetit!
