Snow White's Apple Pie 🍎🥧

Updated: Feb 8

Fun fact about me, Snow White is my favorite princess 👑. By now, you can catch on just how inspired I am by Disney! Besides indulging in the foods at Disneyland, I also find massive inspiration from the films. The first time I watched this film, I was fixated on Snow White's ability to make this apple pie with such ease, from rolling out the crust to creating her intricate latticework with pie crust, it was perfect in every single way.

Apple pie is one that I have learned to perfect over time, and it took many tries. Making your pie crust is optional because sometimes you're cut for time or just need to make this quickly. Pie crusts from the market are also a trial and error process, and the ones I love are from Trader Joe's. What I enjoy the most about baking is taking all the ingredients together and creating a masterpiece, whatever that might look like to you. There is beauty to pie crust, with it being so feasible to use and mend as you please, which is why it's easy to make shapes and latticework happen. Patience is needed, so be wary of making this a bit ahead of time.

Apple Pie

Prep time: 1 hour Bake Time: 1 hour Total time: 2 hours, and additional for cooling

Ingredients:

  • 2 9-inch pie crusts

  • 2 large Granny Smith (green) apples and 2 Gala (red) apples

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup white sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of flour

  • 1 teaspoon and a dash more of cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

  • 1 teaspoon of allspice

  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

  • 1 egg, whisked for egg wash

  • 2 tablespoons of butter, sliced thinly for topping

  • pumpkin cookie cutter, large and small

Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees, with the oven rack placed in the middle. Take a pie dish and lightly spray it with cooking spray.

  2. Take out one of the 9-inch pie crusts and roll it onto the pie dish, laying nice and flat to the bottom and the sides. Shape the sides neatly by making small indents with your finger.

  3. Wash and slice your apples thinly, and add to a large bowl. Add both sugars, flour, spices, and lemon juice. Mix well with a spatula or lightly with your hands. Make sure your apple slices dont break.

  4. Begin taking each apple slice and lay it flat on the pie crust, going around the circle and then laying on top of each other until you are at the top. If you dont want to be that fancy, add all the filling till it has reached the top, and make sure not to overfill.

  5. Add the slices of butter to the top of the filling, scattering around the top.

  6. Optional: Using your other pie crust, roll out, and using the pumpkin cookie cutter or other cookie cutter shape of your choice, cut out about 5 or so shapes. Taking those shapes, add to the top of the pie, in any order or style of your liking. The pie does not need to be fully covered.

  7. Taking your egg wash and a pastry brush, lightly brush the egg onto the crust. You can add some sugar on top, totally optional. If using the entire pie crust, make sure to add small slits in the middle using a knife.

  8. Take a pie shield or some aluminum foil and crumple around the pie crust, do not cover the pie. The reason for this is to ensure the sides of the pie do not burn while cooking for the first half.

  9. Bake the pie for 25 mins. Once the timer is up, remove the pie shields, and turn down the temperature of the oven to 375 degrees, and cook the pie for an additional 35 minutes until the top and sides have browned and the apple filling is bubbling.

  10. Let cool for 1 hour, and up to 3 hours. Pair with vanilla ice cream.

  11. Bon Appetite!
